Intellectual disability is characterized by deficits in general mental abilities, such as reasoning, problem solving, planning, abstract thinking, and learning. These deficits result in impairments of adaptive functioning, which may include deficits in communication, social interaction, academic or occupational functioning, and personal care. In children younger than five years, who fail to meet expected developmental milestones in several areas of intellectual functioning, a diagnosis of Global Developmental Delay is used.
